Dulles turned out to be an excellent tour guide. And true to his word, he did point out everything about the Smoke operation as they went.

“So what’s the source?” Crusher asked, his natural interested in learning making him the perfect foil for Dulles and his droning. None of the others could manage to generate much interest.

“Did you notice the lake below us?”

“The one we were falling straight into?” Malby asked. “Kinda hard to miss it.”

“That’s part of the ceremonial lakes. The Trolls all bathe and use them religiously. Like, literally religiously. These things are damn religious for little ape bastards who like to kill each other,” Dulles said, ignoring Anna’s disapproving glance. “We invited them to come here on a regular basis so they could do the ceremonial burning. So that we could capture the Smoke.”

Lucky frowned at that. “They seem to really like their own locations for their rituals. I don’t see them being the type to just visit when you needed them to.”

Dulles shook his head. “Well, we did do some things to … convince them.”

Anna snorted. “You probably took their young and held them hostage and wouldn’t let them go until they came here for their burning rituals.”

Dulles seemed to consider his words carefully. “We didn’t exactly do that.”

Anna gasped. “I was joking! How could anyone do something like that?”

Dulles frowned. “They aren’t humans. You understand that, right? They’re Trolls.”

“Trillia are sentient creatures,” she sputtered. “Among the first non-human life we’ve discovered anywhere in the universe.”

“Yeah,” said Dulles, as if she’d answered his question. “Non-human.”

“So you can’t just treat them like animals.”

“Sure we can,” Dulles said. “And we did. In fact, I’ll be honest with you. We talked about just killing them and burning them ourselves. I mean, why not? We were making so much money here from Smoke, it was crazy not to.”

“You’re a monster.”

Dulles stopped. “You want to know what we did here, or do I have to keep hearing from little miss moralizer?”

Anna’s nostrils flared, and Lucky thought he could actually see the red rushing up her neck. “Let’s just cool it,” he said. “Why don’t you go ahead with the tour, and we’ll hang back.”

“Good,” said Dulles, who obviously was done talking about it. He spun and started walking ahead again.

Lucky sidled up next to Anna. “I think we just have to let him do this little tour.”

Anna looked at him like he was insane. “And you think I want to talk to you instead.”

“I could just send Malby,” he offered.

She rolled her eyes, but did Lucky notice the ever-so-slight hint that she wasn’t offended by that?

Freaking Malby. Unbelievable.

“I don’t need any of you holding my hand,” she said tersely. “Certainly not a maniac like you.”

“This is going well,” Rocky said. “Do you think she realizes we should just kill her?”

“Probably not,” Lucky echoed.

“Just sayin’,” Rocky said. “If we off her, the pirates leave us alone and we don’t have her bitchy dead weight to haul around. Win-win.”

“Tempting,” Lucky said. “Your treasonous reasoning is noted.
